Although the name is sea but Dead Sea is actually a lake. Earlier it was connected to the sea, via the Gulf of Aqaba. But now it is nothing but a blocked lake. Water comes to this lake through rivers.
The salinity of the water here is 8.6 times higher than the sea water! So there are no plants and fish in this huge lake! Because nothing can survive in such dense water. And so this lake is called ‘Dead Sea’.
However, there are no living creatures in the lake to say that there are no fish, but it is not! This lake has a variety of bacteria and fungi. This lake is not toxic at all. In fact, there are no animals here because of the salinity of its water.
Although the most common name for this sea is Dead Sea, it does have a few more names. For example, “Sea of Sodom”, “Sea of Lot”, “Sea of Asphalt”, “Stinking Sea”, “Devil’s Sea”. How strange are these names of the Dead Sea! On the shores of this sea was a city called Sodom. From there it was named Sea of Sodom.
In fact, no animal or plant can survive in this sea, so long ago, even then science has not improved so much, people have created various myths around this sea. Many people thought, there is a devil in this sea, or there is a curse of the devil, otherwise there is water, there is no fish, how is this? And that’s why they named it Devil’s Sea.
