The high price of onions caused a stir in September-October last year. But last November-December the price of onion fell. Many traders did not release onions by importing them through Chittagong port. The customs department put the onion up for auction on Wednesday.
At the end of the online auction, it was seen that the highest price of onion in a consignment has gone up to Tk 2.79 per kg. In another consignment, the maximum price of onion per kg has gone up to Tk 18.30. In all, the average price of onion in 19 consignments is 10 tk per kg.
Customs has published the picture of the onion taken in the auction. It can be seen that onion seedlings have come out through the sack inside the container. Seedlings are slightly less in two shipments.
The onions that were auctioned were imported last November-December. The traders did not unload these onions due to falling prices in the market. The onion seedlings have come out after falling for a long time in an air-conditioned container. As per the rules, after 30 days, the customs has auctioned 10 lakh 33 thousand kg of onions which were not released.
A total of 10 people took part in the online auction. A person named Nurul Abshar got 13 of the 19 invoices auctioned. Besides, Mohammad Moinuddin Jabed and Sheikh Moinuddin Chowdhury got three each.
After the increase in the supply of onions in India, the prices of alternative country’s onions in the market are very low. Alternative country onions are now being sold at 13 to 18 tk per kg.
Faisal Bin Rahman, deputy commissioner of Chittagong Customs, who is in charge of the auction, said the onions were auctioned off as they were perishable goods. Now the process of approving it will start by reviewing the bids of the highest bidders.
According to the Bangladesh Bank, the average price of onion imported from alternative countries is ৪ 443 per tonne. The import price per kg is about 36 tk.
As per this, the onion imported in the auction has been imported for four and a half lakh dollars or four and a quarter crore rupees. By selling this onion at auction, the customs got 97 lakh tk.
Asked about the price of onion grown in Khatunganj, trader Mohammad Idris told Prothom Alo that the price of onion in the alternative country is very low in the market after the increase in the supply of onion in India. Alternative country onions are now being sold at Bdt 13 to 18 per kg. Red Netherlands onions are being sold at Bdt 32-35. There is no price for onion out of seedlings.
