Hope Hospital started in 1999 in Ramu Cheinda, Cox’s Bazar. It began as a small 50-bed facility aimed at preventing maternal and child deaths. Iftekhar Mahmud Minar, an American expatriate, founded it. Today, it is a vital non-profit organization offering free medical services to those in need.
At Hope Hospital, normal deliveries cost Tk 2,000, while surgical deliveries cost Tk 9,000. However, if someone cannot pay, they can receive discounts. Treatments for conditions like cleft lips and palates are completely free.
Dr. Iftekhar Mahmud Minar reflects on how his dream has come true. The hospital started with its own funds and grew with help from local and international supporters. Under the leadership of AKM Jaheduzzaman, the hospital has expanded its services. Now, it has over 50 isolation centers for COVID-19 in Ukhia and a dedicated 50-bed hospital for the Rohingya community.
Hope Hospital also runs 55 maternal birth centers in remote areas, such as Kutubdia and Maheshkhali. Each center is staffed by a doctor and a nurse, ensuring that expectant mothers receive care.
In addition, the hospital offers a three-year midwifery training program. So far, 700 women from rural areas have become trained midwives. With over 600 employees, including 50 doctors and 80 nurses, Hope Hospital is well-equipped to serve its community. They also have five ambulances and anesthesia experts on staff.
Thanks to support from the World Bank and UNDP, Hope Hospital provides services beyond Cox’s Bazar. Mobile medical teams reach expectant mothers and children in nearby districts. Dr. Iftekhar’s goal is to ensure that no mother dies during childbirth in the rural areas of Cox’s Bazar.
Pediatrician Nimmoy Biswas notes that no patient leaves without treatment. The hospital takes any complaints seriously. Importantly, no one is denied care due to money. They also offer free ambulance services and accommodation for those in need. Midwifery trainees receive their training at no cost, further supporting the community.
