As a seasoned international traveler in the travel industry, I have endured my share of long-haul flights. I’ve faced lost luggage, missed connections, unexpected upgrades, and more sad airport sandwiches than I’d like to admit. I’ve learned that Qantas has the best in-flight snacks (mango ice cream bars!) and that there are free clean showers and sleeping areas at Incheon International Airport in Seoul. With each flight, I become more savvy in making the journey as comfortable as possible. Strategies include packing snacks, binge-watching favorite shows, and having a well-organized bag, soft scarf, and toothbrush kit. Here i have shared with you 12 Long Flight Essentials-
Quality Carry-On Luggage
For short flights, a backpack or tote bag may suffice, but for long flights, especially for trips of a week or more, investing in quality luggage is a must. Choose a suitcase that fits your airline’s size restrictions and is easy to lift, maneuver, and move quickly. For carry-on, I suggest a case with external pockets for convenient storage. Check out our guide to the best carry-on luggage for options.
Comfortable Clothes and Essential Tech
When packing, prioritize essentials like tech (laptops, tablets) and a comfortable change of clothes in your carry-on. Unexpected delays and spills can happen, and you’ll want to be prepared. Allocate most of your carry-on space to these items.
Organized Essentials Bag
A smaller bag is needed for items you’ll need during the flight, such as your passport, travel documents, wallet, keys, and phone. Look for a lightweight, easily carried bag with zips for security. Uniqlo’s popular £15 cross-body bag is a great option, as is Anya Hindmarch’s organized flight bag with labeled pouches.
Travel Pillow
Most airlines provide small pillows on long-haul or overnight flights, but they offer limited support. Use the headrest or bring a quality travel pillow for better neck support and the ability to sleep while sitting up.
Portable Charger
A must-have for both the flight and trip, a portable charger ensures you have access to important documents and entertainment. Opt for a small, lightweight charger with at least two ports if traveling as a couple or with family.
Noise-Cancelling Headphones
Noise-cancelling headphones are a game-changer for blocking out the sounds of drink carts, crying babies, and cabin announcements. Most airlines provide earplugs and headphones, but only noise-cancelling headphones can truly mute the noise. Invest in a pair before a long flight.
Luggage Tracker
Lost luggage was a common issue in 2022, making luggage trackers a must-have in 2023, especially for flights with stopovers or when traveling with multiple bags.
Reusable Water Bottle
Essential for hydration during a flight, replace single-use plastic water bottles with a reusable one for a more eco-friendly travel experience.
Lip Balm
Dry air on flights can take a toll on skin, pack lip balm for a simple solution to moisturize lips and face during the trip.
Toothbrush
Maintain oral hygiene and improve mood with a toothbrush, either provided by airlines or bring your own.
Hand Sanitizer
Keep hands clean and germ-free with a lightweight hand sanitizer, especially in public areas like airports.
Blanket/Scarf
Cope with fluctuating cabin temperatures on a flight by bringing a blanket or scarf for warmth, or wear it as a layer.
